On-grid solar system is a solar power generation system which is connected to the utility grid. In Thailand the utility grids are run by the M.E.A. (around Bangkok) and P.E.A. in other provinces.

The electricity produced by the On Grid Solar System is used to meet your demands and if the system is generating power excess to your needs then it is routed to the grid. The energy supplied to the grid is recorded in a 2-way meter.

There is no battery storage component with this type of system. At night time and possibly at other times your power needs will exceed what is being generated by the Solar System, then you will receive power from the grid.

You will receive a digital 2-way meter showing your consumption from the grid and your supply to the grid. Your excess supply will be credited with 2.2 THB per kwh.

Single phase systems are allowed to feed back excess energy to the grid with a solar system size of max 5 kwp, Three phase systems up to 10kwp.

ROI of this investment should not exceed 5 years.

Advantages:

  • Once installed it is a low maintenance system.
  • You receive rebates from the grid provider which leads to the best ROI, recovery of the installation costs, in the shortest time period compared with other solar system types.
  • There is no battery storage reducing costs and needs for maintenance,

Disadvantages:

  • There is no battery storage so there will always be times when power from the grid is needed.
  • If there is a grid power cut then no power is available.
  • It can take a very long time to get confirmation and the contract from your electricity provider, longer than 1 year in some areas.
  • In our experience some required devices have not been reliable.
  • Microinverters or Power Optimizers of different brands are attached behind the solar panels. Our experience has been of frequent claims, defects , slow replacement service and difficulties to exchange.
    Our impression is that typically these products do not comply well with climate conditions in Thailand of high humidity.

Because of these difficulties we offer Hybrid Solar Systems (see below).

A hybrid solar system is a renewable energy system that is grid-tied and includes battery storage.

The system uses solar panels to produce energy during the day, while the batteries store excess energy for use later at night when there is no sunlight and if there are power cuts on the grid.

The operator and “brain” of this system is device called a Hybrid Inverter which balances energy production, consumption, battery charge and discharge, as well as additional grid supply if needed.

New generations of Hybrid devices can operate in combination with generators and provide the equivalent connection, also being used as “smart load” and “A/C couple” configurations.

The advantage of the Hybrid Solar System is that it will provide electricity in your home during power cuts for your most important appliances. The amount of power available will depend upon the capacity of the battery storage installed.

If the battery storage becomes depleted then power will be supplied from the grid.

Disadvantages
Compared with an On Grid Solar System (see above)

  • Unlike an On Grid Solar System, grid providers in Thailand do not credit any excess supply.
  • Components like the Hybrid Inverter and batteries for power storage make this system more expensive.
  • ROI is longer, up to 7 years.

Advantages

  • Reduced consumption of power from the grid at all times.
  • Power is available to you when there are power cuts on the grid.

An Off Grid Solar System generates electricity from solar panels, stores that power in batteries and runs completely independently of the power grid.

These systems encourage off-the-grid living, a lifestyle centered around energy independence and self-sustainability.

In some locations in Thailand, Off Grid Systems are very attractive as the utility grid supply may not be immediately available or prohibitively expensive to connect to it because of the distance to the closest connection point.

With Off Grid Systems we recommend the use of additional generators to provide an alternate means of power generation especially in the monsoon period when there are periods of minimal sunlight. Solar systems and generators can now be well connected.

A major component of Off Grid Solar Systems is the battery storage. We recommend parallel running batteries to reduce “battery stress” and to prolong battery life.

Disadvantages

  • Costs of components for an off grid system.
    To meet your power requirements it is likely that more solar panels and more batteries will be needed than a comparable On Grid or Hybrid system.
  • Additional, alternative power generating devices such as a generator.

Advantages

  • No costs from using grid supplied electricity.
  • No surpise power cuts from grid supplied electricity.
  • Electricity supply to locations that are not serviced by the grid utility providers.

Battery Back Up.

Not all solar system installations require a battery back-up.
We will help you understand if this option will be a benefit to you.

For checking possible requirement of a battery system please proceed as follows :

  • Read your meter in the evening
  • Read your meter again before sunrise
  • Read your meter again after sunset

When you do this for three days you will see how many units /kilowatt hours (kwh) you have used during the day and also during the night.

Accordingly, the need and sense of a battery system to provide power at night time can be worked out.

You may also want to consider battery back-up capacity to provide continuity of power in the case of power cuts.

What about profitability of Solar Energy?

PEA won’t give you much for excess in “on grid” installations, therefore everybody`s target should be to install a device according to your needs.

In short, you will get your return of investment in maximum 5 years with our proposals for a solar energy device without battery.

With battery included please consider 5-7 years to be realistic.
